I use the same image name for a changing picture on my site.
The picture changes every few days but the name stays the same.

I just noticed that my browser didn't notice that it was a different picture and loaded the old one from it's cache.
Can i do something about this instead of using a different image name?

Maybe you should disable caching of your page using a <META> tag.

yeay but that would be very bandwith costly
isn't there a tag in the image to tell the browser to check for image size instead of name?

Frankly, no. The cache works on the basis of name. If you will change the name of the image slightly, you will get the best of both worlds -- cached copies of the image if it does not change and immediate recognition of a new image.
