Is there a procedure for determining the order that things are inside .htaccess? (on linux)

I had a plugin (wordpress) that had written to my .htaccess. I added code to prevent access to certain files, it had to be before the code that was there from the plugin. When I used my control panel to add a redirect (which it added to the end, it also didn't work until I moved it to the beginning of the file.

Was this just a quirk or have I learned something?

Thanks,

JEDs
