I've always used www.sitemeter.com for counters. You only have to put a tiny image on your page, which doesn't even say Sitemeter on it, just a coloured box.
I use justaddtraffic, its good, they tell you where your visitors come from, what time your visitors came, what screen resolution theyre in, what browser, and some other stuff!
