Book shopping for some web and programming books but am getting lost in the wide array of offerings and don't want to waste cash on some useless resources... I want a good book for HTML, XHTML, and CSS, one for Perl, one for CGI, and any must-have web designing books out there. Any reccommendations? Thanks in advance.

er perl and cgi and basically the same thing. Perl is used to program cgi.

I would always recommend O'reilly books, they're the best IMO.

Excellent, thank you for the replies, it does help! I've been penny-pinching (college student... doin what I gotta do) and am trying to narrow down my book choices and hunting for the best place to order 'em. Amazon's usually not bad with thier used prices and I found one site called schoolworld.com that has a discount for students but I'm going to keep eyeing my options before I send out every last dime I have.

I like the Bisual Quickstart Guides for a cheap overview of a subject (enough to get you by on the basics) and the "Bibles" for more in depth looks.

Ive got a PHP & MySQL for Dummies and a Perl Ebook.. But everything else I just learn from online tutorials... and then save notes in notepad...but save so many can never find what I want
