I have both of these running as test installs. They both seem like excellant scripts. I guess I have to choose one.

I plan to use the winner to update and existing site and hence forth to add new content.

Am I right with these assumptions?

Drupal seems to be a tad easier to set up for multiple bloggers. I haven't figured out how to do it with WP.

WP seems to have more plugins and themes.

Both seem to be about the same for porting over existing pages or at least creating links to them.

Which is easier to create custom themes for?

Or to at least tweak an existing theme?

One feature that I desire but have not explored with either of them is the ability to allow approved users to submit single articles to a certain categories but I would like to be able to assign different permission levels to the categories. For example any registerd user could post to local events but only a "group" called user+ could post to "nightlife". To be honest about it I might like to charge for the ability to post in certain categories.

I haven't ever used Drupal, but I think you're right about the multiple bloggers. WordPress will let you set up approved users to submit articles. Go to Users => Authors and Users to set them up. They'll only have permission to submit articles and not be an admin. I'm not sure if they can be limited to specific categories, but I think you can set it up so the articles need to be approved. You can also set it up so they can register themselves through the site.

I haven't had any problems creating themes for WordPress though I am a webmaster so it's hard for me to judge how easy or not it is. I'm pretty sure there are plenty of themes out there for Drupal as well. The WordPress Codex has just about everything you would want to know about how to customize WordPress either in look or functionalily.

You are right they both have about the same submission features. Depending on how you set them up user signup, posts and other permissions can be controlled from Admin. Admin approval or live postin is an option for both of them.

Drupal appears to be the winner on allowing a blogger to have a distinct identity. All the posts for WP go into the same pot. with Drupal each blogger has their own section where only their articles are listed.

Categories are easier to manage with WP.

Drupal offers the opportunity to add more user levels and WP appears not to. I think I can exploit that option to accomplish the limited ability to post in some areas.

It look like theme template modification is all contained in one file for Drupal. I am just starting to look at that.

How about it Drupal users?

Never used Drupal but I am a huge WordPress Fan personally. Its really the only blogging software I currently use and I have over 30 blogs currently and growing. Good Luck.

its not yet fully stable but definitely will rock , just like WP itself , i am sure

Very.

Directory installations (i.e. site.com/blogname) don't work. So only the vhost (blogname.site.com) installs work and are supported (barely).

If you don't know much about apache, you may have difficulty getting it to work. Your host needs to be willing to setup a wildcard dns entry, and a wildcard apache vhost entry.

If mod_rewrite isn't setup just perfect (to WPMU's liking - and no one can quite figure out exactly what WPMU actually likes), it won't work.

With lots of users, the database gets huge.

PLUS...spam blogs...lots of them!

It is a good idea, and eventually, I think WPMU will be just fine...but just not now...which is why it isn't even in Beta yet.
