Both are simple to create and configure (f.e. Wordpress for blog and phpBB for forum), but with forums is more difficult to monetize...

Blogs are way easier to handly in the long run and also don't require that detailed knowledge when setting them up.

Also in the end when your forum is growing you will need a team to run a forum but for blogs it's easier to handle them via outsourcing

It's easier to create a blog and get readers to the blog than it is to create a forum and get people to register and contribute.

Both are clear and easy to configure. But as per my opinion the best thing to do is forum it provides a number of backlinks and also earn so many traffic to your website.

I would go with a blog since it would be less work once you get it started. A forum will always have people joining to spam there links without regard to forum rules. You will have to be deleting these posts daily or your forum will look like its not cared for. A blog you can leave for a few days without any problem. With a forum you will need to delete threads daily.

Or posting just for signature links.

Which of course is of no use to them because search engines do not "see" signature links here.

Agreed. Actually both are easy to create. But efforts to maintain them are different according to your purpose of creating them.

From my point of view both blogs and forums are easy to create. For creating blogs there are so many free bloggers available or you can use any open source CMS for creating blogs and for the forums you can also use the templates from the internet.

Hi, new here.

I've been tossing around the idea of a forum or blog on my site, but it seems to me that having a forum that isn't active daily would have more negative results than a blog.

They are NOT equally easy to create!

BLOG:
- FREE script - wordpress (I presume you won't waste time with wordpress.com or blogspot.com)
- easy to manage as content is concerned - write a post a day and you're a king.
- you don't rely on a community, even if you don't get comments, you can still do well.

FORUM:
- a PAID script is advisable if you're serious with it. Starts at $140 (XenForo - which is actually my recommendation, since it's an amazing script)
- you need 10-20 posts/day AT LEAST. Usually more. The more the better, so this means a lot of time you need to spend in the forum to create content, reply, manage spam etc.
- you NEED a community. You cannot run a forum by yourself and getting members/posts is not that easy.

So, if you are not too experienced with forum management and would like to start slowly, work on a blog. Grow it, get some decent traffic. You can always add a forum at a later date and funnel the readers to it.

bbPress and BuddyPress are both free forum tools for the WordPress platform.

http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bbpress/

http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/buddypress/

Blogs are good if you have some writing skills.
If you are not the kind of person who enjoys researching and creating
original content I would say blogs are not for you.

Forums have the advantage that their content is "member created".
But forums also tend to attract spammers like flies to faeces.
You need to have some decent spam filter technology in place and
even then you'll need to police it to maintain forum rules.

Also note that in some countries, the forum owner can be held liable for any defamatory or libellous comments posted by the site members

Did either of you bother reading the first post to actually find out what the question actually was???
