Starting from scratch

Ok...

I think I got off to a good start. I like the looks, the feel and general setup. Furthermore I think I have written some fairly good posts to my blog (SEO optimized at best).

But the promotion bit, leaves me a bit puzzled. How do I get noticed in an effective and costless way? Is there any way to get some good and relevant backlinks

The #1 thing you can do to improve the blog quality is write compelling, original copy, preferably early on and with an unsaturated topic.

If you feel like your blockquote is overshadowing your insight and analysis, the feeling’s probably right. Try to reduce the quotes to the point(s) most relevant to your commentary on the post.

Write something knowledgeable but a little controversial and submit to various sites like digg and reddit etc. and hope it goes viral.

the backlinks possibilities are endless....article marketing...free.....user generated content(squidoo, hubpages) is free!

the best way to get traffic is from organic search...so make sure you are SEO optimized. Install google webmastertools on your blog and submit your xml sitemap to google.

Make interesting posts, rather than make 10 so-so posts every day, make 3-5 really good ones.
Dont forget to Add good graphics, Pay a professional if you are not good at graphics and design.

The first thing that yo have to keep in mind is the the main factor in order to get more traffic to your blog site is the content. Write something original, informative, simple and easy to comprehend. I believe if you have this factor, it wouldn't be that hard for you anymore to market your blog.

There are quite a number of article directories like ezine which should help you to get natural backlinks. Other than that, social bookmarks help as well.

content is the most important thing to get your blog run well.
commenting on other blogs will help you make a good network around other bloggers which will bring you backlinks and help in getting good traffic as well
