Yes, high quality, original content is very important. Back linking process is also very vital to get a high ranking blog.

IMO, the content is the base of the blog, first you must fill you blog with the good quality content, and the readers will come again and again, update your blog as soon as possible, the readers may introduce other readers co come too; promote you blog via twitter and delicious and so on!

Try making one that you've got the passion of creating.
You know it's not that easy to make blogs that you didn't have any passion with the topic. What's the best thing to do is to give more emphasis on what's really captivating and nice to be read.

I wasn't that professional in blogosphere but I've had a little idea on how could you make it more exciting. Just keep it simple and updated. After all, what's more preferred by readers were those ones that has the content.

Don't underestimate the power of making contacts with other bloggers in similar niches as yourself. If you can get another blogger to interlink with you i.e you write about blue widgets and he writes about red widgets you can interlink at the end of posts. i.e.

You might also be interested in red widgets go here: "anchor text of partner bloggers site"

You will double your readership and instantly gain tons of links. Do this with a handful of bloggers and you all will be reaping the rewards.

you have to make sure of making back links to many forum sites. You have to know about viral marketing and SEO.

1. Write content
2. Build Traffic

In that order. At the beginning, just write and start building content, getting traffic that bounces right back is next to nothing. Writing about the things you like or do anyway it's pretty much essential. Blogging for blogging's sake won't usually last. Oh and I'd go with WordPress.org self-hosted blog.

I would say that the biggest tip that has helped me out is to make my blog useful to readers. That's a good way to bring in more traffic and to make it easier for visitors to share the articles they like.

Best blogging tip ive learned was how to get blogs indexed in a day...Submit to google webmaster tools, ping blog and add 4 social bookmarks.
