Hello,
I am contiplating creating blog using blogger.com directed towards teens and maybe college students. The blog will be on just about anything that would apply to this age group but I want to know if there is the market. I dont know how many teens actually read blogs.

So my questions
1) Is blogger.com the right choise for customization
2) Is the high-school/college market interested in blogs and if so
3) do they click on ads ever so that I can earn money?

Thank you,
-David Mesenbrink

My answers:
1. If you are a newbie (like me) in the blogging world... yep! blogger is the right choice. Blogger is very easy to use and understand... it is more user-friendly than WP. But Wordpress has many useful plug-ins that will surely help you in blogging. Blogger is for newbie and WP is for expert. hehe
2. I think there is a market when we are talking about the high-school and college students. Because based on my perception, teens are more often the Internet users than adults. But I don't really think that they would all read blogs.
3. Maybe yes, maybe no. Teens are curious... very curious... hehe So maybe there is a bigger possibility that they might click on your ads.

hey thanks,

yeh, I knew WP was more for experts but you have to pay like $30 a month I think to display your own ads.. that would not be a good deal for me...

WP is hardly for experts. It's pretty easy to use. You're best bet is to buy a domain for $10/year, pay for a hosting account (you can find decent hosting for less than $10/month) and then download WordPress and install it on your hosting account. There will even be a good chance that your hosting account will let you install WP with a couple of clicks and no download.

True the above isn't a free option, but it's really not a lot of money. You can really have a site running for less than $100/year. If you plan on doing anything online you're going to want to set up your own hosting accounts eventually so why not sooner rather than later.

And since you're planning on trying to make money from the site you might as well do it right. Spend a little money to make more back.

High school and college students are certainly just as interested in blogs as everyone else. There's definitely a market there. There are actually many markets there. Will teens and college students click on ads? Some will some won't. I'm sure there's enough that will for you to make money. But understand making money from a site is more than putting the site up and doing nothing else. If you're willing to work at it you can make money. How much will ultimately depend on how much you put into the site and how much you're willing to learn.

Think long term...if you want to be professional...get your own domain and have your own WP blog. It is a investment and not a cost.
If you start at blogger.com, then when you decide to be professional, then you got to migrate everything over from blogger.com to your own WP blog.

WP is just as easy as Blogger to use (IMHO). If you take the self hosted route (you can find hosting for < $10/mo) you can do all the customization/adverts you want.

As youngheart said, you'll need your own domain to look professional. Blogger is so full of spammy blogs that I would avoid it like the plague.

My Answers:
1. Yep! It is one of the best free weblog publishing tool. Aside from being free, it is very user-friendly. I suggest blogger for newbie and WordPress for not so newbie..
2. I think most Internet users are from that age bracket.
3. Maybe they will... because teens are so curious. Know what I mean? hehe

Everyone here talks about blogger.this and wordpress.that - but it's all a bunch of mooks taking advantage of you and minting it off your information before you do. They brand themselves through you and make loads of good money that you could ultimately have directed toward yourself.

I searched on google for
freeware blogs php

and this is just one of the things that I found straight away:
http://www.tucows.com/preview/503109

There's LOADS of freeware blog scripts, whether in php, asp or cgi.

All you then need is to set up your own hosting, which costs very little and is worth it, given the higher profit you'll make from this method.

Also, don't be lame and use adsense or kontera or some other 'pay per click' thing - which involves LOADS of clicks being paid for that weren't "worth the money" because nothing was bought from anyone by the clicker.

Be smart. Join a GOOD affiliate network (commission junction is one of the best in the USA, for example) and advertise real mainstream stores from malls and all their products - choose adverts, stores and products which TOTALLY match your audience (out of MILLIONS of products, 100s of 1000s of adverts and 1000s of stores) and you will get a REALLY HIGH rate of return - way higher than any google farmers make.

Just my two troy ounces of gold bullion.

by the way, bloggers need good spelling, so if you're still "contiplating", DON'T! Start contemplating instead.

Blogger is recommended for newbies (I'm one of them) it's simple and easy to use. If you want to know if your target audience is actually existing, try researching about that online or do a survey. Something like go to schools and conduct a survey as to how many of them has a blog and if they read one.

I actually hated blogger before and I don't know why. There is something in me that tells I should use wordpress. But that was before I started blogging. As I read from forums to forums and have been exposed to what blogger can offer a newbie like me, I then started blogging with my hated platform, blogger. But it's a different story now. Blogger is recommended.

A lot of teens already start blogging. They even do profile blogging. But I think they are not so aware with what we know now. I think all they know is with blogging, they'll gain popularity and even respect and reputation.

Teens are always curious. They always find something they don't know or they're not aware of. So if your ads addresses this, then you deserve clicks. Teens are actually more attracted to something "free", as they always experiment on things.
