If i had to I'd post comments on 10,000 UK forums, 50,000 USA forums and 150,000 globe-wide blogs. The net result would be that I'd be earning 1000s of pounds/dollars per month. You can't knock something just because it's scummy. Does rupert murdoch stand outside the station giving the free paper or does he own the entire concept of news? He's scum, it's true, but he got to his target.
SEO, on the other hand, has no place in advertising situations like comment/forum advertising... firstly if you write stuff that is not being taken as there for the purpose of the comment not the link, you'll lose at least 5% of the people who were going to click (usually it's not regulars and owners who you are leading in from those ads but the HUGE traffic they have - they can't stop their users using your links).
I gather SEO takes about 1 hour and then that's that, you don't really need to do any more. Everything else is advertising!
Blogs are good for advertising because along with forums they constitute the largest chunk of online activity outside search engines.
The most important ways to get traffic:
1. buy it (google, affiliate networks, yahoo, msn, aol - just buy it from em all)
2. seo (1 hour to make your site friendly)
3. sem (strategy to get lots of marketing links into search engines)
4. off-site non-searchengine advertising including comments on forums and blogs (using your signature as the place to advertise), links advertised in other places where there are real users pouring through every day... even when I play chess I can advertise my site via my "homepage" link displayed on my account. And there must be a lot of call for including advertising in your signature if you send a lot of emails eg if people subscribe to information from your site for free - all these methods are free and if you bust a gut, if you work the same way someone in a concentration camp had to work (to save your own life) you can easily make 1000s a month from it, it's not a mug's game. But if you don't have to do that, it's better not to because it is the behaviour of the desperate and the needy. A clever man will sit there and make a fortune for doing something far less painful - he or she will do something which hardly anyone else CAN do because what you need most is skill. The methods discussed on this thread are clearly UNSKILLED work.
Just my two 'get a free bigmac' vouchers.
