I'm used to selling tangibles and even software, where you position yourself in search engines and just wait for potential customers to come.

I'm getting into the blogosphere and am wondering how you start getting the influx of visitors? Is it search engine rankings for posts? I know you eventually want to get trackbacks and maybe diggs so your posts attract more attention, and eventually you want a lot of visitors to subscribe to your RSS feeds so you have a constant base of people watching.

But what's the first step? Are there some good websites you should register a blog, like a blog directory? Link exchanges? Any ideas?

Technorati is a good place to start. It also helps to have a feed, and to ping various services each time you post. I use feedburner which enhances my feed, tracks my subscribers and pings places for me. Other than that, I guess publicising a blog is much the same as with any other type of site.

Links from article submission and posting in forums will help with an initial boost for your blog until the search engines pick it up. Pingomatic and manually pinging google often have been affective for me. Feedburner has several great features that will help. Good Luck.

In my case it is a combination of targeting search engines, social websites and forum/ blog networking, but the progress is slow.

Those methods dont work very well. What you need to do is drive 1000's of vistors to your site/ per day.
