Hi All,

Everyone knows that within a few minutes you can have a blogger.com blog up and ready to go. But are there other blogging sites that have similar functionality to blogger?

I have used wordpress.com which I loved except for the fact that you could not put any ads in your blog or modify the templates. I do use wordpress on the domain that I own.

Wait, why can't you but ads on wordpress? Or is it just when you use wordpress.com?

You can have but we need to host WP ourselves and not by WP.com.

It's Wordpress blogs in general. If you put ads there, they will first force your ISP to terminate your contract and then come to your door and kill you. Geez.

If you could be more specific about what you mean with "barriers to entry", I think we could possibly give a more directed answer.

Even with Blogger.com, the barrier to entry is the lack of action...

What I really meant by barriers to entry was cost. Blogger is fine and all but I would really like the ability to do categories and a few other things.

Wordpress is better than blogger to add category.

Although it may seem difficult in the beginning (it was for me...) it is much better than Blogger.

I only use blogger for niche marketing, to see if I have interested readers. If I see (with my stat) that after one month I heve readers, I switch to wordpress.

bloggingcash, that is exactly what I was thinking about.

How long do you wait to determine niche viability? Do you have a specific target traffic/time?

Then good news for you, Google has just rolled out Blogger Beta, a new version that allows dynamic serving and labelling. The latter is similar to categories in WordPress but if you are familiar with tags it is exactly is.

There is no predefined categories, you can label your posts freely.

According to Google, these new features won't be availalble for Blogger users who choose to use FTP/SFTP though.

Try it out:
beta.blogger.com/start

Use your existing Blogger or Google Accounts to login.
