I've been running the wordpress akismet spam filter for about a month. I've got a whopping 24 posts with 88 legitimate comments, but the thing has stopped 266 spam comments. Pretty impressive...
Every now and then it gets a false positive, so I actually spend the time looking through the comments it traps before I delete them. It's pretty rare that I actually needed to, but I don't think deleting good faith comments is a good way to attract readers. On the other hand, neither is letting spam through.
What's been your experience with akismet? If you don't use it, and have a wp blog, you really need to check it out. It's already installed, you just need to activate it, which involves getting a free wordpress ID.
