Ho boy, I feel a bit proud today...

I wrote yesterday an entry about Silverlight/flash on my blog.
Nothing to fancy, just my thoughts and opinion about what is silverlight, and what could be his future.
This was a reaction to a question of our well known moderator ForrestCroce.

You can tell I was surprised this morning, to see that Ryan Stewart, who works for Adobe as "a Rich Internet Application Evangelist on the Platform Team.", had let a comment on my post telling me it was a "real good writeup".

Gosh...
That really makes me feel rewarded...

This made me wondering...
Have you ever received a comment on a post you've made on your blog that really made you proud ?

Not at that level, but congratulations!

It is a great writeup, by the way. I've just sent it to a couple of my tech friends, and I'll be showing it to my boss tomorrow. He wants to convert our site to Silverlight; actually I think he wants to build a time machine and convert a year ago. So this will be great reading for him.

Not to steal your thunder or anything, but that's proof positive that quality trumps seo tricks.

Forrest, you are more than welcome to pass the token to anyone you think might be interested.
And,on the record, your input is at least as important as the one made by Ryan.
You and I are working in the same industry, and I know by the content of your answers here that you are really competent in your field.
An approval from you is well worth the comment I was talking about in this thread.
Would you believe that I would not even had think I was really particularly competent myself 6 months ago ?
It's only by contributing here, and by seeing what my TP is now that I began to wonder if I could not contribute to the community by creating articles, rather than just answering questions.

Mind you, I begin to take a real pride by those writing, and that one was stuck in my head since last week, when you commented my previous post asking me what I was thinking of it.

What amazes me the most is that I still haven't received a single remark about misspellings or grammar errors.
I'm sure there are. There must be. I'm not THAT good at writing in French, which is my native language, so there's no way I could write better in English...

Even about the precisions about the infos I give.
I never had programmed .NET, I discovered some of the basics features of .NET by documenting towards this article, and I'm sure I took shortcuts or missed some crucial infos about what .NET is...
But if you don't see anything flagrant, I might think that maybe I was right on the spot...

Come on, bring it on... Bash me, hit me...
I might even like it

Or congrats me. That, I'm sure to like.

What do you need to know about .NET? I've been using it since the beginning. It's really, really great stuff. I'm ok with Silverlight.NET, for all the many benefits of the platform that I'm not going to hijack your thread by going into. But if you want to know about .NET I probably know more than anyone on this forum, or at least I'm the only one who seems to want to make ASP a sub forum of ASP.NET. Shoot me a pm with any questions, or start a thread in that forum and I'll be happy to help you with whatever I can.

Also, that's way cool you're writing articles to help the community! You should make a TOC page on your site to point out the best ones and explain how they're related and whatnot. Have a look at MSDN, which is bloated and overblown, but navigable.

Thanks John.

It's not that I need to know something specifically about .NET, it's just that I have the feeling that I have taken a lot of shortcut in my really really short overview of what is the CLR in .NET.

I usually take 10 to 15 hours documenting before writing the post. For the writing itself, I spend around 4 to 5 hours laying the structure, proof-reading it, and checking it.

I have to say that I'm not that happy about this last post. I was tired, and I postponed it's realization for almost 1 week. I had the feeling that if I continued to do so, I would not had it written at all.
Now, when I read it again, I feel it really flaky. The structure is weak, the arguments are superficials, and don't get deep.
It's honestly just on overview about my feelings about silverlight, and I'm not that happy about it.
I want (would like) to provides facts before personal opinions.

I'm seriously thinking about expending it further later, but the fact that I never touched .NET is not at my advantage.
So, I would not know what to ask frankly... It's just an impression that I should have gone deeper in the subject.
But I feel like I need the experience, and no questions can fulfill that, only practice.

It's ok to offer your initial impressions before you dig deeper. I did the same thing on my blog when I got a new tripod; wrote about it after only a couple weeks without enough experience. I plan to write a follow up. It sounds like you should, too.

But first impressions mean something. Especially in tech, where the learning curve can be pretty steep. If you can't figure Silverlight out, I'm not even going to try...

PS - The CLR is a lot like the J2EE runtime. When people call .net managed code, the CLR is the "manager;" it checks array bounds before returning an item, makes sure variables are of the right type, and does memory management / garbage collections, all of that at.
