I read a very interesting post on a conservative blog. Well, that's not really true, it's a blog about web design, run by a man with conservative leanings, that occasionally bubble through into the blog. One of these was praise for Fred Thompson's remarks on the Iranian president speaking at Columbia University.

Naturally I left my comments, which are mixed. To some extent I agree, but I'm the poster child of liberalism, so I have my own take, too. I wrote a post, changing the subject a bit but keeping the topic the same. I linked back to High Desert Wanderer's article that inspired me to go off on a different tangent.

Literally within hours, HDW had written a new post, linking back to my blog, encouraging people to read the full post, et cetera. And extending the conversation further. Which is far more rewarding than the links. The downside (and this is probably my fault) is he got my name wrong, it's John Alexander, not Alex. I'm just emphasizing the family name. It goes with the theme of my blog.

Anyway so the moral of the story is we already know it can attract links and traffic to be controversial sometimes. And we know being timely is a good thing. Certainly everybody knows a unique take is good (read my latest blog post, and notice the comparison of Iranian to Russian denial). But I just learned how linking out can bring you acclaim and traffic. If you link to blogs you've just recently discovered.

Good tip - I've done a bit of this before myself. I know trackbacks are useful for follow-ups/replies on posts, though I've never used one myself.

Linking out is especially good for blogs because bloggers tend to be interested in what other people are saying about their blog. The trackback system was obviously designed to facilitate interlinking and word-of-mouth, but I also don't take advantage of it nearly enough.

I bet this works even better for blogs related to the hot topics of the day (politics, celebrities, etc.)
