I'd have to see you're completely wrong about audience size. I noticed the first article on his page is about Meningitis. Let's say I just had a friend get diagnosed with Meningitis and I don't know anything about it. The first thing I'm going to do is google for the disease name and start reading up. Many of the reputable medical sites can be difficult for many people to understand, so blogs like this become a major source for information.
You can also write some very topical articles. HPV and the vaccine for it come to mind. Hot topic, very controversial, very large audience for that topic.
Good SEO practices will make or break your blog getting a large audience. Your individual pages will each need to be promoted.
As far as your site goes, it looks like your layout is jacked up in IE7. The main portion of your articles is pushed off to the left, to the right of that is your navigation column, and to the right of that is the first of 3 google search boxes that I've seen so far. I don't think you actually intended a 3 column layout like that.... After I get below the third search box, the site develops a large gap of white between between "recent comments" and your article content. Make sure you check out your site with IE7 and you might be surprised at how it looks. Also, some of the main people who focus on reading about disease is the elderly. You have a light colored and small font. Even my 23 year old eyes are struggling with it. make your font darker or larger.
Very nice layout overall though. It's easy to see what your site is about, and where the content is.
