Someone I work with asked me this today and I really could not give a concise answer that I am sure of.

His question: "Is/Can asp.net be used in any applications other than a web/browser based environment?"

Is or can asp.net be used in applications where the information is displayed or used by another means than a web browser?

My first instinct is to say no. ASP.NEt is to perform on a web server. But, I am not completed sure of my anwer.

Anyone fill me in on this..?

You can write ASP.NET XML Web Services that can be used in any context, like a DOS application. Or, you can write ClickOnce Windows Forms applications that are served up as temporary dll-based assemblies by IIS.

The answer is sure it can - it just isn't done very often.
