What is the Google pagerank (PR)? the PR is a representation on a scale from 1 to 10 of how reachable your website is, 10 being the best score a website or webpage can achieve, the PR is calculated based upon the number and the quality of links pointing to your website, allot of webmasters forget the 2nd part and concentrate on the number of backlinks alone and ignoring the quality of those back links, allot of them still get involved in link exchanges with other similar websites, I still see these requests posted on forums and encouraged by webmasters on their own sites.
Since the Jagger update back in 2005, Google started picking up link exchanges (among other things such as blog spam) and totally cutting them our of your back links or your PR, link exchanges will not boost your PR or your link popularity. There are still arguments if link exchanges gets your penalized, some say they do, other say they don't, a general rule of thumb if you still want to exchange links is to exchange them with relevant websites, don't exchange link with a furniture website if your website is about server security.
Allot of webmasters get so involved with their PR and they forget that PR has no relation with your search engine rankings, some lower PR sites might rank higher than higher PR sites for specific keywords, the reason is that they have good onsite optimization + good optimization of their inbound links, placing your links on the right websites with the correct anchor text greatly helps your rankings.
Here is an example:
At the time this article was written http://www.myspacegames.net is ranked at the 1st position on Google for the very popular term Myspace Games, the website has a PR4, where http://www.flashgamecodes.com is in the 7th position, and it has a PR7.
So what isn't the PR?
1- It's not a representation of the traffic your website gets.
2- Its not a representation of how popular the website is.
3- Its not a representation of how well the website ranks on the search engines.
So how can you increase your PR AND your SERP (Search Engine Ranking Pages)?
1- The 1st and most important point is to build quality content that gets linked from other websites naturally.
2- Place links on relevant websites with your main keywords in the anchor text.
3- Don't reciprocate links unless you absolutely have to, and only reciprocate links with relevant websites.
4- Don't place links in link farms or on sites in bad neighborhoods (pill, porn, gambling sites)
5- Try to get links on authority websites or from established websites.
6- Buy links if you have to, but make sure you get the links within the content of the page if you can, not at the footer with other links, and make sure the page has at most 20 outgoing links.
I am assuming here that you have done your part and did your onsite optimization so that both your onsite and offsite optimization work together.

yes it is very interesting .... the problem is to understand the links that are of hight quality. ( do you see the pagerank ? ).
I work very on directories, they are links close to my content but of low importance .... I hope in this way to obtain good results.

Good read there. Also commenting on quality forums and blogs which have a high PR along with the signature of your site will help in getting links and so it is with the social networking/bookmarking sites.
