Backlinks, which are essentially websites that have a hyperlink pointed to your website, help you generate traffic in a few ways.
First, of course it'll mean that you are listed on different websites. Especially if you're listed in websites that are similar in nature to your site, people might see your link, click it, and come to your site.
Another way to get traffic from backlinks, and the more popular one, is through leveraging them with the search engines. Engines such as Google and MSN use how many backlinks your website has as one of their criterion on how high to rank your site in the search results.
For example, if you have more backlinks than another site, your odds are becoming #1 are higher than the other site, just because a few sites are linking to you. The search engines think that websites would only reference higher quality sites, so they rank it accordingly.
There are many ways to get backlinks to your site. It can be quite a simple job and will generate lots of traffic to your site.
One of the first things you can do is to join link exchanges. Now, before you go out and join any link exchange - make sure this is one where links are manually approved. This means that rather than thousands of sites being listed that have no relevance, the webmasters ensure that there's a directory of higher quality websites with a similar subject to yours. Generic link exchanges that aren't manually approved can not only not help, but they might hurt you. Google doesn't like those at all, and could actually penalize your site for your cheating.
Another thing you can also do is write articles on your chosen subject. There are many sites you can use that allow you to upload your own (unique!) articles. Make sure that your link is included in the main body of the article, or at the end. Make your link sound interesting & explain that it has more on the matter in question. Not only does this mean that you need to research your subject matter and you learn more about it, it means that every article you post is a new back link to your website.
The other good thing about this is that when you place your article on a directory, other people can copy and paste it onto theirs, providing they link back to your website. Not only do you get the link from the article website, but you get links back from every site that decided to publish your work. Not bad for a few minute's worth of work.
There are also link directories. Websites that list other websites, similar to a phone book/yellow pages for internet pages. You can add your website to this with a detailed description & soon you will be having hits from all over.
These are 3 simple steps that will easily generate links to your website, which in turn will push your website to a higher ranking for search engineers and generate you higher traffic levels.
