Selling Your Prized Possession

In the typical webmaster’s career, there often comes a time when it is necessary to sell a web site or revenue based project. Sometimes online profit web sites sell for a minimum bid and other times web sites are sold for an extremely high price surprising the seller themselves. If might seem foolish to ask, but wouldn’t you want to sell your site for the highest price possible? Well of course you want to reap the most out of your sale. There is definitely an art to selling revenue making websites and I would like to share some hints and tips with you.

First, determine what market would be most interested in purchasing your site. You wouldn’t sell winter coats in the Amazon jungle. Likewise, you probably wouldn’t go searching Christian web forums and gathering places to sell an adult oriented web site. It’s because most Christians are not interested in purchasing that kind of material. Often, the webmaster market includes people who are interested in acquiring more web sites, so that is a great place to start. Other good markets to target include local businessmen, entrepreneurs, and anyone who is a little risky.

The second thing is to recall all the information about your site that you possibly can. The more details you remember, and the more specific you are, the more likely you will find someone who is interested in your web site. Through my past experience of selling my own web sites and brokering some sites for friends, I have realized that the more information that you submit, the more people are interested in finding out more about your site and are more likely to purchase your site. If possible buyers see that you are very devoted to your site and interested in it, then they become interested themselves.

Third is coming up with a fair, yet attractive price. Now the flexibility of your price depends solely upon the market you are catering to. It would be very hard to sell a very large site for ten years of profit to a market of teenage entrepreneurs who are just getting started in the business. Therefore knowing a lot about the audience who is most likely to purchase your site is a good idea. Usually, it is safe to price around 6-8 months of revenue. I have seen sites go for much less, but I have seen popular sites sell for far more than two years profit. It really depends on how you sell your site and who you find that is interested in your site.

Finally, you need to list your site for sale. Earners Forum and Site Point are VERY good places to list your site for sale if you are targeting computer literate webmasters who know the industry very well. You can also list sites on Digital Point, www.namepros.com, www.dnforum.com, as well as some other sites online. And don’t be worried if your site doesn’t sell in two or three days. Sometimes waiting for your site to sell is most profitable. I experienced this one particular time. I was selling a site that was making a low double digit income each month. I was looking for a mid three digit range figure for the site. My auction ended and no one wanted to buy the site. I let the site sit for a couple days, and a private person contacted me wanting to purchase the site for 20 months worth of revenue. Sometime it really pays to just wait a little bit.

Hope this advice helps you with your next web site sale.
