Selling A Domain Name

With the Internet, there are a lot of profitable business models that most people don't realize exist. One of these models is the act of buying and selling domain names for profit. Some people's entire business model is just this.

When you think about it, it's not a bad idea. Many people who want domain names are very emotionally attached to the domain name that they want. They will consider paying above what market value dictates in order to get the website name they think is important.

If you happen to be interested in selling domain names, you just may find yourself making quite a bit of money. But be careful -- selling domain names is not as easy as buying domain names.

First of all, there are different ways that you can market your domain names. You might scoop up the domain name, and then find an existing domain that would be interested in this domain name. For example, if you were to purchase Amazn.com (a slight mis-spelling of Amazon), Amazon.com might want to purchase this from you. The reasons that they would be interested in this are twofold. First of all, you could redirect that site to Amazon.com and collect tons of affiliate commissions. On the other hand, you could take that site and forward it to a competitor. Neither option is especially attractive to Amazon.com, and if they can pay you offer a reasonable rate, it would make sense for them to do it. This would be a private transaction, and there is usually no third party involved.

Another way to market domain names is to put them on domain buying and selling website. Just like there are people who buy domain names for profit, there are other people who look to buy domain names from these people. Within this type of transaction, a third party or group will handle the transaction for you. You might use an escrow service, or perhaps, the company that it's, you are selling your domain name on will handle the service for you. Either way, there is another element that you need to consider instead of just doing everything yourself.

Yet another way to market your domain name is to have a broker handle it on your behalf. You would let your broker know the name of the domain, and they would sell it for you. If they were to sell it, you'd give them a commission. If not, you wouldn't have to pay anything.

In placing your domain, you need to consider its appraised value. An appraisal takes into consideration many things -- the name of the domain, the industry category, and if there's any type in traffic that is sent to that domain name. There are many free services on the Internet that one can use to see how much the domain name is appraised for.

In short, while selling a domain name isn't as easy as buying a domain name, it's not necessarily rocket science. There is still a great deal of profit to be made within this business model.
