Naming Your Site for SEO

By Lpspider

Released On 05-28-2009

The domain name of your website is the single most important thing you should consider. The only thing that could possibly be more important than the domain itself could possibly be the topic, but even then it is more a matter of opinion than anything else.

Because of this, you need to consider as many of your options as possible, and you need to try to look at it from the perspective of your potential visitors, members, users and customers. When choosing a domain name, you have a few options that you can approach it with. Most notably, you can get a name that's unique and brandable, but unrelated to your site; you can also get a name that is related but brandable; or, you can get a site that's not really brandable at all but that is keyword rich.

In short, a brandable name is unrelated, a semi-brandable is related but stands out, and a keyword rich domain name is related to the topic and not to the company. Keyword rich domain names generally have the lowest amount of customer recognition.

Brandable domain names can be very good, but only in very specific scenarios. However, a name that isn't related to the topic of your site at all is generally something you should avoid. The domain name should stick out in the customers mind as unique, but the visitor should also get a general idea of what the site is about solely based on it's domain name.

With brandable domain names more than anything else, customers tend to form an opinion of your site right away. Even after hearing only the name people start to create a reputation for your site. Your name needs to convey the topic of your website. An unrelated name puts you at a sort of disadvantage from the start.

It's hard to decide when to brand you domain name. Generally, you should brand and choose a name that isn't full of keywords when you're trying to build a company that deals offline as well as online, when you're building a site that has extremely high amounts of competition, or when working on a website that is very general and not specific to any given topic.

If you're trying to make money online, nine times out of ten it's better to go with a name that's easily optimizable and that is keyword rich.

Domain names that have the keywords of your topic in them are usually the best. Why are they the best? They're the best because, in most cases, the vast majority of the visitors to your new site will come from search engines. Search engines index sites fairly quickly, but it can sometimes take many months for them to begin to rank well.

Typically it will take much much longer for a branded domain to rank high for the topics it's about, if at all. However, if your site's domain name is keyword rich, it has keywords you want it to rank for in it, than not only will it rank sooner, it will rank for more related terms.

Well. But isn't content is the king for SEO? As far as I know that is. Domain name should be short and memorable instead. That is only mine approach

I suppose that there is no connection between domain name and SEO. I suppose that more important what your web site contain then whatdomain name is. I'm sure the SE think in the same way

The domain name might help a little, if concentrated on 2 essential keys. But in more competitive keys it doesn't mind.

Never underestimate the value of a generic keyword rich domain vs a brandable.

Brandables can be nice but in my opinion Generics are better. Even a small boost for SEO adds up over time.

I prefer something brandable, though if you can get a keyword in there why not. One way keywords in URLs can help is when people link to you. Most of your links will be your domain name so if you have a keyword in there you get that keyword in the anchor text.

I wouldn't go out trying to stuff keywords into your domain. Like I said I prefer short and memorable. But if you can get a keyword in there it probably makes sense to.

Having a great domain name is very important to SEO, in my own opinion. The domain name is not the most important part of a web page for high rankings in the search engines. The title of the webpage is actually the most important part of a webpage. I know this from doing testing. I changed some of the words in the title on one of my websites, without changing anything else, and my website dropped like a rock on Google. Besides the website domain name and the title there are additional factors that also must be included on a website in order for the website to rank well in the search engines. Some of those additional requirements for high search engine rankings are the H1 heading, using the alt attribute for images on the website, and having content on the webpages that contains keywords.

What better situation than your site name being a description of your site, I think that is what makes it memorable.
