Link Building is, to be straightforward, the building of links to ones website. These inbound links can be created by a wide variety of methods: reciprocal links, newsletters, directories, search engines, link exchanges, link sales, as well as many more. Link Building is very important when it comes to marketing a website, particularly a new one. Link building is often regarded as one of the foundational basis’s for creating a successful website.

Inbound links are what initially get search engines to your website in most cases, and oftentimes it helps determine your ranking in such search engines. This is based on the number of links and their location. With Google, inbound links also play a strong roll in PR.

The building of links is very valuable when it comes to search engines, as mentioned above. However, there are various methods and tips that aren’t well known - and are also debated. They may or may not work. Theoretically, Google (and other search engines) have begin to filter results even more heavily - making links with surrounding text such as “sponsored links” or “advertisements” less valuable. Again, this is purely theoretical. In addition to this, it is rumored that links from domain extensions like .edu or .org have a higher value than the traditional .com, .net, or .biz or others.

The advantages of link building are high and ample and you’re bound to get results; if not in search engine rankings, then in click through traffic. Link building creates general awareness and visibility of your website and gives you a much higher possibility to build up search engine ranking. It also generally gets your websites indexed by search engines such as Google, Yahoo!, MSN and many others. Link building takes time - it is a long term method of advertising, so to speak. You will build up your site’s link popularity, and, with time, will get the results.

In today’s growing webmaster world, link building is really the key. It’s worth the work you put into it. Aside from building quality unique content and articles, I think link building is key. If I had to list the importance, it’d be number two on my list.

A sub-controversial way of generating basic inbound links are website directories. These are a group of web pages that list a number of web pages, often ranking them by popularity. Some people say that directory links are worthless and perhaps even can hurt your websites: others follow the philosophy that any link is a good link. I personally prefer the latter - you decide for yourself.

All in all, link building is one of the most important things when it comes to building a website. Quality links improve your PR and your rankings, as well as generate click through traffic in most cases.

However, one must realize that link building alone is not enough for a successful web business. Link building is a great thing that is bound to help your success tremendously. You must have a strong balance between various necessities, including marketing, search engine optimization, quality content and overall devotion. Link building is a time consuming process, so use your time wisely.
