With the webmaster world expanding every day, a question often asked is “What kind of market should I enter?” Before any web developer starts up an online enterprise, they should most definitely figure out which niche would be the best for them. I have developed a couple of hints and tips for finding the most appropriate market. Along the way, I will give specific examples for each step of the way.
First, think of a topic that you are very interested in. This particular topic can be something that you know a lot about, or it can be something that has simply caught your interest yet you are clueless about. Either way, you must be willing to do some further research into the topic that you pick. My specific topic will be “aerodynamics and flight.”
I know a little bit about the topic, I have a lot of interest in flight, and most of all, I am willing to do more research regarding aircrafts and everything flight related.
Once a very specific topic has been chosen it is time to find relevant keywords. These keywords should be 1-4 word phrases that are very direct. Some tools that will help you find good keywords are Overture’s Keyword Selector and Google’s Adwords Keyword Tool. Both of these tools will help you pick out specific keywords related to your topic and show you the most searched terms. For aerodynamics and flight, some keyword phrases include “aerodynamics and flight”, “aerodynamic design”, and “aerodynamics in aircrafts.” All three of these phrases are very specific. Having a general phrase like “planes” will make it very hard to rank high in search engine results. In addition, you might get visitors who are looking for something completely different then your specific keyword phrases, which will probably turn them away from your content.
Now that the hard part is done, developing some site ideas is the next step in picking the best market. Using the same keyword phrases that you picked out, search for these phrases in popular search engines such as Google, Yahoo, MSN, Alexa, and Lycos. Thumb through the first couple of pages on the search engine and take a look at what other people are doing to get ranked high for those specific keywords. Be sure to note some of the popular techniques and always be thinking of unique ideas that you can use yourself. If you find that the particular keywords that you chose were completely saturated, then feel free to go back and brainstorm some different keyword phrases. The whole process of finding an appropriate market is trial and error over and over again until the perfect market is found.
The final step is picking a starting point and going with it. You will never be successful if you never start, so dig in. Think of some unique features or ideas to implement into your site that would benefit your targeted market. Look through the eyes of your targeted visitor and ask yourself, “If I were them, what kind of features would I want or what kind of things would be really cool if I had access to them.” When you are thinking outside of the box, you will experience success. The most profitable entrepreneurs are the ones that find very specific markets and dive into them with enthusiasm, perseverance, and a never-give-up attitude.
