Designing Web 2.0 Style Logos

Web 2.0 style logos are one of the fastest growing styles for logo design. There is no direct definition for what a web 2.0 style logo should look like, but there are many similarities between certain logos that are put in the category of “Web 2.0.” The sites themselves generally focus on creating large communities for small niches, but the most prominent commonality is their appearance. Most often web sites classified as “Web 2.0” are very simple in design yet professional, and they often have large text with lots of white space in the content areas. The logos are all in large type and feel open and relaxing. Web 2.0 style sites often use bright colors on the text and lighter backgrounds. The also usually have small groups of large text. The sites are also spread out in there layouts and easy to navigate.

Web 2.0 Logos

Developing a logo for any business or site is very important in increasing the profits. The font you choose to use in your logo is probably the most important decision you make when designing a logo. When you look at a logo the first thing you see notice is the text. After you read it, you examine how it looks and then pass over the actual design. Some good examples of clear fonts used in logos are shown below.

You have your soft round fonts used on many sites such as Myspace.com below.

Another popular style is the high tech futuristic looking fonts such as shown in Newsgator below.

Then you have your classic typefaces such as the one used in this logo.

One of the most important things in logo design is to keep it simple the name should be the most prominent feature. You should also take into account basic design elements such as shape, presence, weight, and contrast – all of which are very important in logo design. There is nothing wrong with a text only logo as long as it is easy to remember and recognize. Standalone text naturally fills all the space it occupies. Fonts are designed with visually consistent weight and contrast, meaning much of the work to make your design visually consistent has already been done for you. There is nothing wrong with using symbols. In fact they can be very strong, but for start up companies that don't yet have a high level of recognition, text based logos are usually the best choice to go with. When designing a logo it's always a good idea to make it a vector in case the client needs to use it on print for items such as t-shirts, business cards, and decals for vehicles.

Common Web 2.0 style logos often have effects applied to them to such as gradients, reflections, soft shadows, outlines, and shine effects. A good logo often goes well with many different backgrounds as well as in black and white. However, people generally believe that cool finishes is what makes professional graphics. Keep in mind that over doing or over applying many effects may not enhance the look of the logo.

Web 2.0 based logos look slick and very complete. Often, a logo is the first thing a site visitor looks at and it can turn them away from your site, or turn them in a direction to continue browsing your site. The more attractive the logo, the more likely your visitor will stay and proceed to earn you money whether it be contextual ads, CPM advertisements, or products. All in all, the logo design can make a huge difference!

Nice article! I was never unsure of the exact definition of Web 2.0, now I know its not very clear cut. Its more of a case-by-case basis whether something is web 2.0.

great description of Web 2.0

Just after a quick scan it looks like it was coined because of the dot com crash that happened and Web 2.0 seemed to fit. Still a lot of disagreement of what it means but google's web applications (online word, online speadsheet, etc, etc) in my mind is a good example of Web 2.0. A new mentality of what the web can do with no hard boundaries and the move from desktop applications to web applications (allows for mobility and freedom in computing).
