In part 1 I told you how important choosing your blog subject is and how to grab your reader’s attention, now I’m going to talk about the actual writing of your blog.
Here are some great tips to get you going:
1. Write what you know
The saying goes ‘write what you know’ and you’ve probably chosen your subject because you know quite a lot about it. You’re already an expert whether you have a college degree on the subject or not.
2. Research it
With blogs there comes a point that comes where you just can’t think of anything else you know on the subject, or you can but don’t know the fine details. A good writer will always do a bit of research even if they know their subject in totality. This is where the search engines are your best friends. Using simple keyword searches you can find news stories, other articles, and more on the subject you are writing about. Use these extra facts you find in your own article to make it not only more complete, but sound more like an authority or expert on the subject. Just be sure not to cut and paste what you find. That isn’t writing original content and can get you into a lot of trouble.
3. Fake it
This sounds pretty stupid at first, but in reality, you’re never really an expert at anything. There’s always some little piece of knowledge that you’re missing. By researching and gathering your facts, you can word it in ways that make it sound like you knew all that stuff on your own. In the article you have all your t’s crossed and your i’s dotted, and only you know that at this point you really are only a step ahead of your reader. Let them think that, and tell all their friends about this ‘expert’ they just found and the expert’s wonderful blog. Just don’t fake it too much, because eventually you’ll be called on it if you do it too often.
4. Be interesting
Your style might be serious or it might be humorous, but you still have to keep it interesting. Add graphics in the way of photos, and involve them in your article. A picture speaks a thousand words, and the readers will want to read what the whole thing is about. If your article is boring, it won’t hold your reader, or cause them to tell their friends about your blog. Consider yourself your own salesman, and keep their attention by selling them the story you are telling.
5. Get them talking
People often forget how important the comment section is for their blog. Hell, I’ve seen writers who disabled it all together! Not only will offline discussion promote your blog, but also online discussion brings people into the mix. The reader’s involvement not only shows that your blog is attracting readers, but also encourages others to visit it. This is the heart that pushes the pulse of every successful blog.
