A Practical Guide for Link Building

By tamar

Released On 05-04-2009

Link building is an area in internet marketing that requires discipline and motivation. A good amount of people feel that the market is saturated. As a webmaster myself, I receive hundreds of link exchange emails weekly requesting reciprocal links. I ignore 99.9% of them. The other 0.01% has something of value, and here's how you can also benefit from good link building strategies.

Seek out relevant sites. One of the important things is that your site value increases within the SERPs (search engine results pages) with relevant links. As an example, if your site is selling products related to plumbing, don't look for links from sites that have absolutely no connection to the topic (art sites, sites that are financial related, sites about trees, you get the idea). Look at sites that are related to plumbing in some capacity (perhaps a product that works simultaneously with your plumbing device, like a plumbing cleaner, or maybe bathroom/kitchen sink sites).

Submit to directories, but not all of them. Some of the finer directories out there are the Yahoo Directory and Best of the Web. Both of these are highly relevant and human-edited to ensure high quality links. Ensure that you're submitting to directories that accept high-quality sites because these are held in higher regard from the search engines.

If you are offering a service, join your local chamber of commerce or the Better Business Bureau. You can get a very good localized link through this method.

Speak to bloggers who talk about issues related to your topic. You can email them or participate in the community. Community involvement is probably the best way to get recognized. Read bloggers' posts and comment (appropriately). Don't comment-spam. Give valuable insights and participate in the discussion with other commenters and the blogger too.

If you do send out reciprocal link exchanges, don't expect webmasters to honor it. However, do give them reasons to (highly targeted traffic, relevancy, etc.).

Contribute articles to sites that discuss related topics. If you're offering a tech service, contact tech bloggers and write an article that is somewhat related to your offerings (and is obviously targeted to the readers). Usually, the blog will add a small bio about you and your site at the end (or even at the beginning) or the article.

Focus on building great content. Make the content social-media friendly. Submit it to social media sites and let the traffic build up naturally. This requires you to be somewhat social-media aware (know what content works on social media sites) and building up a network. However, the more eyes your content gets in front of, the more likely you're be able to score some linking opportunities. As a blogger myself, I always look for relevant articles through social media sites to link to and discuss. This is an avenue you should not just glance over. Social media is the new now.

These are only a few of many tips you can utilize to build some high quality traffic. And bear in mind that while relevant sites are best, somewhat closely-relevant sites are also pretty good too. As they say, build it and they will come. Just tell them where to find it.

A good start, and it's always nice to see articles pushing content. This is very often the most overlooked part of SEO!

Thanks for the article.

This is really a nice thing to learn, because back links are the reason for success for web sites. You need to have strong back links not only for traffic but it helps to increase SERPS as well as PageRank.

Link building is an essential part of offsite SEO as each link is seen as a “vote” in the eyes of the search engines. Thanks for the article.
