10 Social Media Strategies You Should Apply at Least Once a Week

By tamar

Released On 05-29-2009

It may sound that social media is a huge time investment, and usually, in the beginning, it is. I speak from experience when I say that I spent hours on Digg to build myself a reputation as a top 50 Digger. While I'm now on hiatus from submitting to Digg, I still spend time to keep myself immersed in social media to keep my social media account strong (or at least visible) so that I'm not forgotten.

When it comes to social media, don't just let your accounts languish and die down. In fact, if you want to promote your marketed content or whatever you are looking to gain visibility on, you're not going to want to take a rest. You really shouldn't.

So what should you do to keep your account active? Without further ado, here are some things you should do, if only for a few minutes a day, to keep your avatar on the mind.

1. Log into Facebook and write on a wall of one of your friends. It could be one of those "haven't seen you in a long time, how are you doing?" messages, or you could just continue a conversation with a friend who you're talking to regularly. I often combine both. Additionally, take advantage of your Facebook account and update your status message. It takes less than 10 seconds to do and it shows that you're being active.

2. Write a few messages on Twitter. Say hello to your friends, thank people for following you, introduce yourself to new people you may be interested in, and utilize your network. At this point in time, Twitter is THE hot thing, and you should be using it if only to build a relationship with others.

3. Check out your LinkedIn profile and try to build upon your resume, if possible. Add a recommendation for a friend. Find other friends through friends and introduce yourself (obviously, make sure to do so appropriately and with a proper introduction. Otherwise, and I've seen this happen, if they say "I don't know XYZ," your account may be blocked from sending additional requests for abuse). Continue building your network.

4. Use the StumbleUpon bar and StumbleUpon a few sites. I aim for a minimum of 10 sites a day. I'll often hit the thumbs up button only, but when I really like something, I'll give a review.

5. Log onto Digg, Mixx, and Reddit, submit a story or two, and vote upon your friends' stories. Write a few comments. Add people to your network and introduce yourself (again, politeness and etiquette is needed!).

6. Check out MySpace and write on a few people's pages. Answer your inbound messages (chances are you have a few messages). Look for new friends.

7. Update a Wikipedia page, obviously with information that is accurate. I've run into *so* many Wikipedia pages that are out of date. Search for something not-so-frequently talked about and make the changes. If something is notable (you'll need to look up Wikipedia's guidelines for noteworthiness), add a new page if it doesn't exist already.

8. Upload a photo or an album to Flickr. Add descriptions. Add friends to your network and comment on their photographs. Join a new Flickr group.

9. Upload a video to YouTube. Otherwise, just comment on a few YouTube videos and rate them. (Of course, you'll actually need to watch them -- it's not fair to rate them otherwise!)

10. Go onto Yahoo Answers and look at some questions that you know you have the answer to. Help another person out. In this case, you can even link drop if it's appropriate to their question, so if your product or service relates to the question, by all means, go for it.

This list can go on and on. Social media sites exist everywhere. However, these are just a few things you can do to be a strong social media player in the space and build up some considerable respect.

Problem is with a lot of social bookmarking sites like digg, reddit, etc, you need to be a "power user" to really attract a lot of attention. You can google how to be a power user for digg or reddit for example and it generally revolves around the friends you have. For example, a lot of the power users are in tight groups where they bump up/share others submissions.

I actually have been trying to become a power user over at digg, but it takes a lot of time and dedication like many other things in order to get decent results. So if you don't have the time, then just hope your SEO is great

depends. I've found on reddit, you only need an interesting post to hit the top of the front page.

digg OTOH, is run by groups that post together so, it's a little more challenging.

That was really good pices of advise. But even if a lot of them you could do just for few minutes, overall doing everything would still consume hours of my time.. But still if someone has an extra time, I must agree that you should really include that on your daily routine.

These are excellent tips. You have reminded us that we should regularly participate and build relationship and broaden our network through adding new friends, commenting on their post and the fact that this cannot be done overnight but it should be done on long term basis.

Some interesting comments in this thread, such as don't have time, boring etc, maybe it time you considered outsourcing!. As webmasters you can probably get-by by being a one man ""team.
As marketers looking to make money you have to spend time marketing yourself and your business, anything else should be delegated, sure it costs money but like the man said you gotta spend money to make money...just my take on it

I agree. Facebook + Twitter is already a potent combination if you know how to maximize it.
