As well, it is probably a little better suited for freebie sites.

Wrong assumption. The only two merchants I do well with there
are NOT freebie merchants. They sell good hard good products
at reasonable prices with decent website presentations.
In all fairness, these are two of maybe a dozen, I test promoted
so there might be more there.

the quality of affiliates is lacking a bit IMO.

I can't make a judgement on this, but would logically tend to
agree with you. I would also think that the quality of many of the
merchants is also lacking!
Given the few mentions of shareasale in the other forums, and
most of those few mentions not being very positive from the
active affiliates that post there, I tend to believe that the
better quality affiliates either don't know about the network,
are still in a wait and see mode, or they are not impressed with
the merchants and the network.
BTW- How many cj merchants have banners designed "free by xxx.com" If a merchant wants free banners they could just go
to a site like
http://www.bannerforge.com/ and design a
"professional" looking banner for free. See, it runs both ways.
Professionally presented sites that convert will get professional
affiliates.
