I've made about 3 $20 sales through the Hostrocket program at CJ and a few other sales with lower payouts. In all I've probably made about $100 from affiliate payouts on CJ.
How did I do it?
I chose a few programs and put them on my site. Then got a lot of visitors and, because the affiliate programs are targetted, I eventually got some sales.
I think a major part of choosing a good affiliate program isn't just targetting it well, its getting one that will actually make the sale. Its all very well sending x amount of clicks to a site, but if you are only earning for signups it is important that their sales copy is very good.
A couple of other tips I've picked up:
If you run a content-based site, you will find it difficult to make affiliate program sales. Try finding some that will pay you for signups for free trials, or for clicks you send them.
Don't give up if an affiliate program doesn't make a good return over a length of time. I could make 20 or 30 cents a day using standard CPC banners, but go weeks without making a single sale with the Hostrocket program. I would still make more money with Hostrocket, though, as one sale is the equivalent of 200 clicks (at 10c a click).
Final tip?
Get your own advertisers. I've made a lot more from people buying advertising directly than I have from affiliate programs.
