Hi folks,

I wanted to ask a question of the veteran IMers around here. I'm new to the affiliate marketing game (well, I've read about it for years and followed the exploits of Shoemoney etc), but this is my first time actually diving in.

I'm going to start slow and do some testing with a Clickbank product to learn the ropes. I'm hoping to rely on you guys to give me some guidance along the way. My first question is, what would be your first step in getting started promoting this product.

I'm guessing PPC isn't the way to go as I'm new with it and would likely blow my budget. Would you suggest creating a blog, writing articles for submission, etc? What would be your first step if you were starting out.

Thanks for your help,
MJT

First thing you should do is to create landing page for your product - a mre personalized way of greeting you audience and sharing your thoughts on what you are selling will work just fine. A blog could suffice as a landing page IMO. Others may think not. Submit your articles to directories for PR building and establish good back links in order to drive more traffic.

Opting for PPC for you product is not a bad idea at all. It brings in targetted traffic that has the highest conversion rate. Having 10 targetted visitors to your site is always better than getting 100 random visitors. So long as you do PPC properly, it would yield favorable results. researching on the right keywords for your niche is very important. Some may claim to have bad experience with this, which could be true at a certain degree especially if they don't take too much thought and research before doing it.

In everything you do in this industry, planning and utmost knowledge should always be your top priority

My opinion on affiliate marketing differs from that of many, but I have had fairly good success marketing affiliate products when I choose to do so. As the old saying goes, "there's more than one way to skin a cat."

The biggest problem you face as an affiliate marketer is competition from all those other folks selling the same affiliate product. How do you position your link ahead of there link?

There are a few ways to do it, but I think the most effective way of doing this is to develop a rapport with a targeted niche audience. You can do this through a blog, a forum site, whatever.

Once you have established some level of credibility with your audience, they will listen to what you say. That does not mean they will buy the products you pitch, but it does mean that they will at least listen to you when you do pitch a product.

I like to add a bonus or some other incentive to not only buy that product, but to buy it from me. For example, if I were recommending article submission software I would probably offer an audio recording or manual on article marketing. Explain that they need to use your link, then forward the receipt to you so that you can forward a download link for the bonus.

I tend to stick to those products that pay large commissions. You may only make a handful of sales, but if your commission is $500 per sale it only takes a few sales before you're talking real cash. The plus here is that you'll only have a handful of requests for the bonus, which you can respond to yourself.

When I do respond to a bonus request, I like to add a personal comment or two. I also try to share some of the benefits that I found with the product. This all helps to reinforce the purchase decision. Remember, people have buyers remorse and part of your job as an affiliate marketer is to reinforce the reasons your referral made the purchase decision so as to reduce refunds.

Of course, sometimes people make a legitimate mistake and buy a product they don't need or cannot afford, or it simply is not what they expected. When one of my referrals need to return for a refund, I always offer to help them if they have trouble getting their money back. Because I limit myself to products from reputable marketers, this is rarely a problem and has never required much of my time. The benefit of doing this is that you reinforce your relationship with that person who may very well buy other products through you, you provide reassurance to others by the fact that you offer your assistance, and you get some good PR for yourself and those selling the product.

This is not an over night success sort of thing. You have build this slowly. I started marketing in a non-IM niche, which also helped because it was not nearly as competitive. That has changed a bit in the last couple years, and I find myself competing with some pretty big companies now. They have much larger lists, a lot more money to spend on advertising, and should be all right be kicking my butt. Much to my satisfaction, my audience has stuck with me and seems to appreciate the added service I deliver. I guess it works because I am on the "Super Affiliate" list for every program I've adopted for my sites.

Good luck with the affiliate marketing venture. Give yourself a chance to make mistakes and experiment a bit. Too many people expect immediate results and those are just far too uncommon to rely upon. You'll struggle for a while, then find a formula that works for you.

Thanks for the replies guys. Your advice was very insightful and I'm going to get to work on a few of the strategies both of you have mentioned.

I'm not looking for overnight success (but if it finds me I won't turn it away), but rather I'm looking to establish a legitimate business which I know will take time. The biggest road block for me at the moment is product selection. I said I was going to give a Clickbank product a go, but I'm not 100% sold on them just yet. Are there any affiliate networks you can recommend over another. I'm thinking of applying to Azoogle, but I've heard they can be a tough program to get into.

My advice is to identify a niche that you are truly passionate about. It does not need to be Internet marketing related. In fact, it's probably better if it is not because there are so many folks pushing IM products.

Once you settle upon a niche, then the product selection will begin to make more sense. For example, let's say you're really into playing handball and you want to make a site all about handball. You would then seek out products that you would want to use. Examples might be gloves, balls, shoes, etc. Let's say you find an online sporting goods retailer with a decent affiliate program. Perhaps you find one or two good Click Bank products. Maybe you write an e-book or put together a set of instructive videos and market them from your site. Those videos could also be marketed through your own affiliate program.

The reason it is important to focus on a niche that you're passionate about is because you'll be investing a lot of time and effort in these projects. If it's a passionate interest of yours you'll enjoy it more and you'll probably do a better job of things. The key is to just make sure you have a market you can sell to, but chances are if you love it there others that share your interest.

Chris nailed it right there! Opt for a niche you have knowledge and passion for. You can procide more useful and relevant info this way and attract more visiotrs and eventually turn them into buying customers. Drawing traffic is just a prelude to conversion.

don't discount PPC too quickly... i recommend Jeremy Palmer's Quit Your Day Job... i'm reading it for the second time this weekend and it's quite good.

Currently what I'm testing is build a high traffic blog and start promoting affiliate product to my blog readers. The biggest benefit that I can think is I already built my credential and most of my readers trust me. So I can promote affiliate products easily. Of course, I only promote what I think is benefit to my readers.
