Hi guys
I have a website that uses the Opencart shopping cart, it has a built in affiliate system.

What do you think is a fair commission for me to offer.
My product sells for $20
The default is is 5%
I think I should offer a bit more.

More may induce your affiliates to "push" more.....

Your share may be less...but if the sales increase dramatically...
you put more in your pocket...)

(A digital product does not get "used up".......)

As much as your profit margin allows for.

Knowing how much an item sells for is of no use for calculating what commission to offer. Offering 5% of a 20 currency unit sale would be fine provided it costs less than 19 units to actually complete the sale. However at 5% with a 19 units cost means your profit is 0.

The commission payment should be calculated from the profit margin, then you can express that as a percentage of the selling cost.

I agree about the profit margin too. That's part of it. Comissions also vary from product to product and how well they sell.

Also, some products can allow for a higher mark up than others, so the comission from one product sale to another may vary for that reason as well.

I am new in affiliate things. But your product value is $20 and the default is 5%(Did you mean commission?) if yes, then publisher will get $1 as $20*5%=$1 right? Moreover, there might be taxes. So, I think (its only my own opinion, you don't have to take it seriously if you don't like), you may rise commission rate to 10-20%.

Any taxation that applies to earnings are NOT the consideration of the vendor.

The commission rate depends on the role that you are playing in the business process. If it is a minor one, commission rate are low as 2% to 5%. The more important your role to the process, the higher the rate. Rates can go up to 50%. rates more than that are very rare.
