My stor is about the design, but not just about that, more like about the earnings in the way in design. Time back, I inspired article about envato network - then I also decided to start there to earn ... at least try.
Let's drop story with registeration, I will say so, in order to pass the test and become an author, just go read the manual, and further ahead 12-15 questions. Do not even try to look for answers on the internet, read the manual properly.
And since I'm the author! Sounds cool ... but what to sell? Pfft ... logo and icons! Somehow, for an hour or something like that i did 18 icons unpretentious, immediately remade them into a vector, and then write a description and send it. The same is repeated with the logo.
Waiting time.
Officially they say that your file can be viewed up to a week, so sit and relax..
1. It is useless to look at the progress bar of your file, moderation take a lot more time then progress bar, sometimes even till 3-4 days.
2. While waiting it's better to do more & more stuff.
Benefit with moredation if your file is not kicked, but told to finish, moderation is faster - much faster.
Refused?
Yes, I drew the interface and found it wildly cool. Posted and only after 2 days later I received that my file was not accepted. - not fun and it does not match with other trendy models. I was outraged and sent to another site on their network. After 2 more days again refused and said - go to the first site, they say there is better. I sit at a loss, but still fighting with them for the truth.
How do people on the forum say that failure - the best that can be. Can better reflect and figure out how to make the file more interesting. And if you do not get the first, second, then a third should work.
I will note one thing, they are not always after refusing to reveal exactly why. More often it is from the series: too easy, is not relevant or do not correspond to the current trends on the site.

You can celebrate - that's for sure. Ambiguous feeling like a few days waiting,looking for the pixel in aa progress bar are moving one by one. Time to wait for the first sales. The first two files I had - Faile, and took third file I made the first couple of bucks.
What is better to sell?
My first experience was with the envato network GraphicRiver - scantily there IMHO. Although the first sale was there, but:
1. they put not really high prices on items
2. terribly many items going along the day
3. file is lost among hundreds of other new files
the odds? few of them ...
Themeforest IMHO more interesting in terms of what Wordpress themes stand at 45-60 dollars, which is sort of what-no money. Of course in the beginning you will be like me 50% of the profits from the purchase, but it's in the beginning, you can take comfort. According to my observations, the is a maximum of 10-12 items per day - that is, to stay a couple of days on the main page of the site is real.
I started with the html template, and after the first deviation from the fact requested improvements - my project is accepted.
In the end, I put for sale template html + psd. Already got 2 files with second items is 5 sales right now.
Why to afraid of moderation or not to afraid...
1. Do everything in the manual written at Envato FAQ
2. Do not argue with the moderator, kindly contact him so that he could see his strength
3. Do not use pictures from google
4. write documentation
5. arrange the names of pictures correctly (I was rejected 5 times because of this)
6. write more in the description and place only juicy preview pictures

In general, going to continue to win Envato, now having the experience, everything is started to go a lot easier. The plans to do something about 30-40 templates. On the current situation I did 2, but it took four days for the development of clean + long moderation.
