Can you fix this I was asked ! Oh sure, that is a "piece of cake" was my reply ( pun intended) and to prove a point, I handed this job over to Ellizabeth Oviok the postmaster of Point Hope Alaska
A 50 year old Eskimo woman who has never worked in graphics on a computer ever in her life,
she is sitting at one of my computers with two 19" monitors. i opened photoshop and put this on her monitor.
I said these words to her.. Zoom in as far as you can go, pick the eye dropper tool and take a sample of the "good" area, then use your brush to paint in the bad area. start with the SMALLEST spot you can find. using the smudge tool blend it if need be Zoom out to check your work.
that is all I did she did the rest by herself, she had a great time.
5 hours the first night, then 3 hours the next day.. tell me what you think of this Eskimo rookie ? !! I think it is pretty **** good for the very first try.

when the customer showed up to get the new restored print 8 x 10
She flipped ! This looks so "brand New" she was all smiles, she paid the 75 dollar cheap fee I charged and gave the money to Elizabeth Elizabeth !

Once this was put into a frame and hung up on a wall, from 3 feet away it is
PERFECT
so wadda do yew think ??? be honest now !
arty:

.. .. .. " Just like the "barber" said . .. .. .. NEXT !

Nice work. Looks like a lot of detail was lost on the girl's ankles though.. unless that's just because of the low-res version here.

Yes I agree 100%.

But.. .. .. when this is put into a frame and you stand a foot away from that image..

99.9% of all people will 'study" the faces, the cake, and the overall central point of focus of the image.

She is now wearing what looks like "socks" instead of the "nylon" look which showed the detail in the ankle area. that "nylon" look is gone.

ya know what? the owner of this was dancing all over the place, she could care less about the appearance of that one area.

I know what you mean though, and I agree, but I really think it is,

irrelevant. FOR A FIRST TIME rookie to acquire that kind of patience, to keep going one tiny spot at a time for 8 hurs is amazing . Painstaking patience is needed to continue spot by tiny crack and spot to tediosly fill all that in. It is just a remarkable effort in displaying patience! preserverance, and dedication. Imagine what this individual could do 5 years from now on a "butchered" color print scanned and ripped . I know people, that if they can't get the job done with one click they give up!

Research now means "two clicks"

Elizabeth Elizabeth!! gosh what a fantastick job !!

She did an admirable job for sure.

I have a ton of old family photos, some close to 150 years old and I spend plenty of hours restoring many of them, so I know what it takes to do this kind of work.

REally ! ?? well I never knew that... .. back then.. I didn't know squat about photoshop. but in real life I used to do this all the time using "brushes" .

And I & Elizabeth took the "hard' way but she did a magnificent job for shure..

My honey! so patient.. skilled hands. and a whole lot of love went into restoring that photograph. Everyone in the village was amazed that Eliszabeth did that on her first TRY!

Try using clone tool and selections instead of just colormatching with blobs next time. Great job for a 50 year olds first time though!

nice outcome....

clone tool is quite good for this...

but
we can try like cutting out the important items in the image and do our repair work and later pasting tat image whic was cut before..

it was easy to do.. in the only manner in which we knew how. but the work itself was easy, just time consuming. I can see now.. after becoming familiar with the power of the clone tool that this job could have been easily done in less than two hours using that method.. !! thanks for all the wonderful words and comments !
