Hi

I found this image on istock as an example. How do you draw the stems of plants so that they are thick one end and thin the other? Is there a trick for doing this? Is it the pen tool? Any ideas would be great!

Pen tool is 1 option, using a brush with the fade might also work. I suspect though that that work was done first in Illustrator.
