As far as I understnd, smart objects are images that have been converted to vector format by PS so the use can resize and distort them without pixelation

After I right click on a layer and convert it's contents into a smart image, I 'll be able to resize it without distortion. When enlarging an image, where does photoshop get the extra pixels if it's working in vector forma?

Have any of you found the smart object useful?

Smart objects can contain both raster and vector data.
You will not be able to resize a smart object made from pixel based artwork without the distortion.
But if you insert a vector artwork and define your smart object - you're free to transform it with perfect quality kept.
