photoshop cs2 help

Hi all after some help i know the basic of photshop for some time but want to learn it all so got book this xmas however i come across a problem im on the chapter paste into sections that will creat a piece of txt with a bacground in the txt so a masked layer.

the book says select an area of a layer

choese edit copy

then edit paste into and it creates a new layer and a masked layer and ive done this but then but it dont seem to be working am i doing sumthink wrong?

thats because you might not be pasting it right, heres a way to do it, most likely the same as they are showing you but here:

>first you click (ctrl+select) your background, making a selection
>ctrl+c to copy it
>then ctrl+d to deselect
>ctrl+select your text to make a selection
>go to edit
>paste into (not regular paste, could be why your making a new layer)

and thats about it

i tried that still dont look right tho u got msn and i can send u the file what ive done its bugging me as i know what it mean to look like and can do it in fireworks

here's another style,
>create a text
>make a selection of the text
>click the background layer u want it as
>press ctrl+j
>and this will crfeate a new layer with the text made of the background image, but this isnt masking
