Umm, one way I would suggest selecting to show rulers and and where the ruler says 512 pixels (units set to pixels) thats the absolute middle.

For exact, i always use maths!

So half of 1024 = 512
and half of 768 = 384

Now all you do is set the x axis to "512" and the y axis to "384"

Now your image will be exactly in the middle!

Simple as that!

Umm . . . by using guides?!?! Photoshop has a great aligning tool that is life saving. Turn on your rulers, and then click on the ruler and drag into your work file and a 1 pixel blue line will come with you. Whatever layer you are on, and if you have "snap to" selected, while dragging your guide, it will "snap", or pause in the exact center of the background, image, or whatever object or objects that are in that layer.

So if you have dragged your guide to the middle and it has snapped to the center of your background layer, then you can bring in individual pictures, text, or designs and snap them to that guides left, center, right, top, or bottom.

In short - guides save lives
