Going from GIMP to Photoshop

After innumerable amounts of tutorial-watching, I think I have the basic hang of Photoshop. However, one HUGE thing has bugged me that no tutorial has seem to cover.

If you've ever used GIMP, you'll know that when you create a new layer, it functions differently from the other layers. But if I cut out a new layer in Photoshop, then apply 'Curves', or any adjustment in the Adjustments box, it applies that adjustment to the whole image. It's not until I 'Merge Down' the adjustment layer that it is 'applied' to just the layer I need. This is a nightmare when I need to colour-correct part of an image.

Can this behaviour be changed to act more like GIMP? When I have just one layer selected, I'd assume everything I do will happen to just that layer.

Thanks!

Not sure I can help you Scott because I don't have Adobe. I have a copy of Gimp but rarely work with the software. Have you tried duplicating the the layer with the image, apply the curves adjustments to the duplicated copy of the image? I work with a lot of layers. Also you should have a selection / lasso tool where you can select part of the image for making adjustments in just the one layer and just part of the image.

Probably not much help here, enjoy your software though!

Ah, selecting just the part I need seems to work. Shift-Ctrl-Alt-3 also helps to select all the pixels in a layer, or by inverting a selection to all the transparent pixels. Thank you very much!

Layers are tricky that way but I think Adobe intentionally did it this way so you can keep your filters separate until you merge - more control this way.

Better for what?

Anything that you can do in Photoshop can be done in GIMP.

shouldn't the fact that GIMP is free and Photoshop will cost around £650 (a little over $1000) be a consideration.

Or are you planning to use a file stealing site?

Uhhhhh... Heh... *ahem*. If I had money, I would buy it. I really would. But since I don't, I didn't. I'm using an infinite trial version, all I did was replace the amtlib.dll (liscencing file for all Adobe programs) with a different one, so I still have all the trial limitations (no 3D, for example).

GIMP is definitely worth the price (free). If you want to do really advanced stuff, Photoshop is the tool. I started in GIMP, did some cool edits that turned out really well, and tried Photoshop, doing the same thing, but just slightly easier.

The tool you need depends on the job. You wouldn't use a 12-wheeler to move a desk, so why would you need a $1000 piece of software to just put 'filters' for Facebook on it?

I've been using GIMP for a few years, and as you say, use the right tool for the job, I have no need for 75% of what GIMP can do, so Photoshop is a total waste of money, same with anything else from Adobe.

I used to use Paint Shop Pro until Corel bought it and made some Microsoft style "improvements" to it.

I must tell you that even though gimp's a free software for image editing and modifications, I'd still say photoshop's better, efficient and innovative.

I'm sure you're gonna agree with me because I've used gimp for 5+ YEARS and shifted to adobe cs5 at the start of this month. I still feel the difference when i open the same image in gimp and photoshop. comparing both, i find photoshop efficient, but gimp is quite easy to handle.

Yeah. It's certainly different, although the new version of GIMP with the unified window sounds pretty good from people I know who are really into it. The way PS handles pixels feels better, though. If you make a gradient of equal resolution and colour and try to select part of it in either editor with the same tool/threshold, you'll get a better selection in PS. It makes selecting fades and shadows much easier.

Photoshop definitely does a better job compressing the files down as well. My JPEG files are 2x smaller yet have higher quality.
