you cant save as a vector but the best way would be to save as png-24 then open in AI and do a live trace on it.

Yes, you can - save as EPS format.

Better yet, export your paths and copy/paste into illustrator

Hey Lady, when i stroke it ( )an fill the path an add agradients an then save it as EPS the vector quality of it no longer exists. is there a way to retain this along with all the effects added within PS itself??

You'll have to export the raw paths, then apply those effects in Illustrator or some other vector graphics program to keep the clean vector.

There has to be a way to do it within PS CS4 itself.

Photoshop is NOT a vector program, it's Raster. You can use paths to create vector objects, but in order to have true vector scalability you have to use a vector program, such as Illustrator or Xara.

why you don't do it straight in illustrator? It is so redundant to have it in photoshop then in a while you will have it in illustrator, If you want a vector, I would suggest illustrator, its the best, the name explained itself, photoshop intended for photography, illustrator intended for illustration, Raster and Vector, way different. But one thing if you insist, it is an advantage to have it first in illustrator because when you export the vector in photoshop no matter how big you will change the dimension, the quality will never change unless you will rasterize it.

Export to paths is a start but in my experience it's not a very clean path. Maybe it's gotten better since I last tried it. It's always best to know the final destination of the art before beginning. Print (how big?) or screen (how big?).

I have had pretty good results with http://vectormagic.com/home tracing raster art. I think you get a couple free trys.

In the file menu of Photoshop, go down to the Export menu, and select "export paths to illustrator". You get a nice .ai file with your paths in, ready for editing.

Try select vector path in Photoshop and copy in clipboard.
Paste clipboard in Adobe InDesign or Adobe Illustrator

if you're drawing with the pen tool and you're "filling" the path manually, then it's not vector. Make sure you're doing it as "shape layers", I believe its actually resizeable within the EPS file, as long you're under shape layers. You can test by converting a text into vector, (layer > type > convert to shape)

only the gradients and effects will lose quality I believe, unless you resize the layers within photoshop, then you can scale it without losing any quality.
