There are a number of ways you can make shadows, depending on the kind of shadow you want.
- You can use a big soft brush, set to a low opacity and put in the shadow manually on a layer UNDER the thing you want the shadow on.
or
- 1 - create a new layer UNDER the object you want the shadow on
2 - Load the object you're shadowing as a selection, click on the new layer you just created.
3 - Fill it with black ( you might want to turn off your object so you can see what you're doing.
4 - apply a gaussian blur to the new shadow layer, make it big until you get an effect you like.
5 - lower the opacity on the shadow layer until you're happy with it.
The benefit to this method is you can distort or transform the shadow any way you want. I do this a lot for perspective shadows.
or -
Use a layer style to create the shadow, then split the layer style out on it's own layer. You can then manipulate the shadow layer any way you want.
To create a layer from just the shadow effect, RIGHT-CLICK on the drop-shadow effect, and choose "create layer".
