Is the shape on it's own layer ? If so, CTRL+CLICK the layer's thumbnail to load it as a selection.

Are you following a tutorial ? What part are you supposed to be deleting ? Are they each on their own layer ?

If the gradient copy is on it's own layer, use a layer style and put a black color overlay on it.

awesome ladynred! you answered two of my questions and it works great, i can select things without using the tools now. great. the last question is i want the gradient shape on top, to cut the black shape copy below it. they are on separate layers. it is in this tutorial.any more help greatly appreciated. thanks so much for answering those others.

Ok, select the gradient shape layer, and load it as a selection as I outlined above.
Next, activate (click on ) the layer with the black shape, with the gradient shape selection active, hit your delete key - the shape should cut out of the black.
