A logo should be designed to fit the business. I don't like the idea of taking an existing logo and changing it to fit.
As far as the logo you've posted, it's fine, but it's a bit generic. There is nothing unique in the design, but it's a pretty good job.
Essentially, you have 3 or 4 basic design elements and have put them together. How it looks overall will also depend on the background color. On white it looks alright, but if you placed it on a gray background it wont work. It probably wont work on a black or very dark background either.
Originality is important in logo design. You also want simplicity and the ability to re-size without distortion. If text is involved, it needs to be clearly legible even if it's very small, and you need the logo to be easily recognized after the public becomes aware of it.
Look at the logos for Dominoes Pizza, ebay and Prudential. They were specifically designed with the client in mind from the very start.
I'm sure you could probably alter your design and sell it for 35 bucks to someone who can't come up with anything on his own, but why not do what a real designer does. Design original pieces that fit the customer's needs.
