actually you CAN do this ...
if you can get your word document exported into PDF format, you can open the PDF in Photoshop 7 as a graphic. (i think adobe has a free service to let you do create pdfs on their website). there are also pdf export plugins available for word or add-on postscript print drivers which you can then 'distill' into a pdf file with adobe's (or a third party probably) Distiller application.
i also am pretty sure you can install a generic postscript printer and output to .ps (native postscript) which i *believe* photoshop can open. don't quote me on this one as i'm going from memory here. but
another way, rather tedious, is to creat a TEXT BLOCK in Photoshop and then copy/paste your word doc contents into the block. in this case your formatting and line wrap will be messed up but the text ought to all appear and be available for formatting.
