Auto Contrast trouble

I've been using PhotoShop 6.0 for years and all of a sudden, one day the "auto contrast" feature - which I like using to get started on enhancing photos - goes defective. Instead of "fixing" the picture, it casts a greyish fog over everything. Any ideas as to how I can correct this?

This will probably be 'preaching to the converted'.

Nothing that I know of would cause this. Probably it requires a reinstall of Photoshop. If it's still playing nasty games after a reinstall, try putting it on another machine somewhere and testing - without any plugins. If you duplicate the problem on the other machine, then it's probably the software. If not, try adding one plugin after another, testing all the way. If after all plugins are set up you don't have the problem, then you will probably have a conflict with another program and I'd lay bets it is an operating system problem.

I had the same problem, except it was a red cast as in a mask. No one ever figured out how to fix it -- including me.

Oops, sorry, I had the problem on auto-level.
