If you’re doing a granite overlay you want use a layer mask, then select your granite tool, and change the settings in the top menu bar from the default foreground to background granite to foreground to transparent it will look like a color fading into a checkered board.

If you just a granite effect then do the something without the layer mask. You can also do it in blending options.

are you trying to make a transparent gif? for that you will need to use dithering.

The gradient bar has the option of going one color two transparent. it is the second option from the left when you click on the gradient bar.

well it depends on your color. U can also use the opacity and change it to make it transparent.

... or you can cut the layer with feather on your selection, and this way you can use the poligonal lasso and you`ll get the transparency any any shape you want ... note that you will loose the part you cut ... but by using lots of pixels as feather you`ll get an interesting image to transparency ... of course this won`t be usefull for everything but it`s useful in some situations ...
