Need Help Please

Ok I have a banner with the background color white but the problem is the background color on my site is white I just want to put a simpe black border around the edge. When I use the rectangular marquee tool and release, the outline forms not into a rectangle but into straight lines on top and bottom and curved lines on the left and right. WHen I open my image there is always in the left hand top corner a little beige box with a 1 and an envelope or something in it. ANy one have any idea what this is and how to get rid of it and how to solve the border problem . Thanks

Just select the banner and go to edit > stroke.

Set the settings to 1 px, color: black and "inside" and then it should add a black border around it

or you could do another layer,
do layer style >stroke>inside black 1px
then save for web.

Go to "View" in the top menu, "Extras" section, "Show"... turn off slices...
