What you're asking is not a simple process, and to get really good results you have to be good with selections, masks, blend modes, adjustment layers and lighting adjustments.

I'm a big fan of using Quick Mask Mode. Works very well.

I have found photoshop hard to learn as well but there are a lot of free e-books out there that are quite useful.
